Ripley Yorkshire Universal British Directory 1791

In the west riding of the county, is four miles from Knaresborough, and 204 from London; has a bridge over the Nyd; and is noted for its plentiful production of liquorice. The market is on Friday; fair, Aug. 25. Here is a charity school.

Netherdale is a tract on the north side of Patley-bridge, through which runs the river Nyd, from the bottom of Craven hills. The road through it to Ripley is much shaded with trees.

Kettlewell lies under a hill between Langshethdale chace and Netherdale. In 1686, its inhabitants were almost all drowned, by a violent flood in a thunderstorm, as were those of Starbotton, the next village.
