Newtown or Newton, is situated on the banks of the Severn, in a fine vale of very rich and fertile land, on both sides of the Severn. Its market is held every Tuesday, and allowed to be the best in Wales, being supplied with wheat in wagon-loads; and the most part of Radnorshire and Cardiganshire are constantly supplied from this market. It is also the principal market for flannels. Here are six fairs yearly, viz. the last Tuesday in March, the first Tuesday in May, the 24th of June, the last Tuesday in August, the 24th of October, and the 16th of December. – The following is a list of the principal inhabitants:

Newtown is surrounded by seven turnpikes; one leading to Machynleth, being twenty-five miles. – On the right, at the distance of four miles, is Aberhavesh-hall, the seat of Henry Procters, Esq. – On the left of the six mile stone is Park, the seat of John Herbert, Esq. – One gate towards Llanvair; on the left, at the distance of four miles, is Gregynog, the seat of Arthur Blayney, Esq. – One gate leading to Llandilo, thirteen miles, and Radnorshire. – Another leading to Bishop’s Castle, fifteen miles; on the left of the two miles stone is Delvorgan, the seat of John Herbert, Esq. also the village of Llerry, and several other gentlemen’s houses adjoining the said road. – Another leading to Poole, thirteen miles and a half; on the left of the seven miles stone in Penant, the seat of C. Humphreys, Esq. – On the left of the seven miles stone is Wavner, the seat of R. Muxon, Esq. – On the right is Caerkewell, the seat of William Pugh, Esq. – The other two gates lead to the confines of the county.
