Middleham Yorkshire Universal British Directory 1791

Middleham is in the North Riding of the county; and is seated on the river Ure, 255 miles from London, had once a castle, built in 1190, where was born Edward, Prince of Wales, only son of King Richard III and is noted for a woollen manufactory, and frequent horse-races. Its market is on Monday; and fair Nov. 6 and 7. The town stands on a rising ground, and the castle was on the south side, and was formerly moated round by the help of a spring conveyed in pipes from higher grounds. – The church is extra-parochial.

Gervase-abbey, near Middleham, was built in 1145. – Preston-Scar, near Middleham, remarkable for its extensive prospects, having seven churches and the cataract of Aysgarth in view, together with Middleham and Bolton. – Coyerham, commonly called Corham, is also near Middleham; here was an abbey, built in 1280. – The river Cover falls into the Yowre below Middleham.
