<p><span>The Fosse-way leads from hence through the north-west part of this county; but, when it enters Nottinghamshire, it inclines north-east, through the vale of Belvoir, or, as it is commonly called, of Bever, to Newark.&nbsp; All this long track is through a rich and fertile country, having north-eastward the noble river Trent, for twenty miles together, often in view.</span></p>

]]></description><wfw:commentRss>http://www.parishmouse.com/leicestershire/rss-comments-entry-3784325.xml</wfw:commentRss></item><item><title>Market Bosworth Leicestershire Universal British Directory 1791</title><category>Market Bosworth</category><category>Universal British Directory 1791</category><dc:creator>Sally</dc:creator><pubDate>Fri, 24 Apr 2009 13:22:02 +0000</pubDate><link>http://www.parishmouse.com/leicestershire/2009/4/24/market-bosworth-leicestershire-universal-british-directory-1.html</link><guid isPermaLink="false">332482:3561943:3784320</guid><description><![CDATA[Market Bosworth is seated on a pretty high hill, in a country fertile in corn and grass.&nbsp; It is noted for a bloody battle fought here between Richard III and Henry earl of Richmond, afterwards Henry VII wherein King Richard lost his life and crown.&nbsp; This battle put an end to the long and bloody contention between the two royal houses of York and Lancaster; which, as fame tells us, had cost the lives of eleven princes, twenty-three earls and dukes, three thousand noblemen, knights, and gentlemen, and two hundred thousand of the common people.&nbsp; At the town they shew several pieces of swords, heads of lances, barbs of arrows, pieces of pole-axes, and such like instruments of death, said to be found by the country people in the several grounds near the place of battle, as they had occasion to dig, or trench, or plough, the ground.&nbsp; The town is near three miles from the place where the battle was fought.&nbsp; It is thirteen miles south-west of Leicester, and one hundred and six north-north-west of London.

Burton Lazars (once belonging to the knights of Jerusalem) is a hamlet to this parish, as are Sysonby, Freeby, and Welby.&nbsp; The pastures all about are exceeding good, and the appearance pleasing.&nbsp; Fairs the first Tuesday after Jan. 17, Whitsun-Tuesday, and August 21. &ndash; The following is a list of the principal inhabitants:
