Hunmanby Yorkshire Universal British Directory 1791

Hunmanby is situated in the East Riding of Yorkshire, about two miles from the German ocean, or Filey bay. It stands upon a rising ground; is enclosed with a fine wood on the north-west, where has formerly been a castle, the seat of Humphry Osbaldeston, Esq. and on the west side commands a fine prospect of the sea. Hunmanby is distant eleven miles from Scarborough, and eight from Bridlington. The market is on Tuesday, but it is now partly declined. Fairs, May 6 and October 29. The town being surrounded with fine fields, the inhabitants are chiefly farmers, as will appear by the subjoined list. It is a fine hunting country, with plenty of game.

At Lebberston, a little village, a small way from the sea, the famous river Derwent takes its rise, and makes its way west, instead of running into the sea here. And here we may observe, that the East Riding is in no wise so fruitful as the other two Ridings, by reason that the middle part of it is over-run with the woulds, which are high grounds, barren, and Moorish; but are however well stocked with sheep: yet the eastern part upon the sea is fruitful and pleasant, which, as well as the southern part, produces all sorts of grain and grass. But then, if taken in its trade and traffic, it excels both the other Ridings.
