Holywell Street Strand A Handbook for London 1849

Holywell Street, Strand. A narrow dirty lane, extending, parallel with the Strand, from St. Clement’s Danes to St. Mary-le-Strand, occupied chiefly by old clothespress and the vendors of low publications. Here still swing over some of the shop-doors a few old signs.

“Holywell Street, commonly called the Back side of St. Clement’s, a place inhabited by divers salesmen and piece-brokers. The street runs up to the Maypole in the Strand.” – R. B., in Strype, B. iv., p. 118.
