Alvington is a village and parish, situated on the high road from Newnham to Chepstow, and the western bank of the river Severn, distant 9 ½ miles south-west from the former, 6 ½ north-east from the latter, and 2 ½ south-west from Lydney, in the Hundred of Bledisloe, Union of Chepstow. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient building, with a square embattled tower and 5 bells, and has recently been restored. The living is annexed to the rectory of Woolastone. There is a school for children of both sexes, built by Higford Burr, Esq., and supported by subscription. About a mile and a half west of the village is Clannafalls, the seat of the Hon. Wm. Middleton Noel. The population, in 1851, was 400, and the acreage is 1,506; rateable value, £2,600. The Hon. W. M. Noel is lord of the manor, and, together with Higford Burr, Esq., is chief landowner.
