Abergele, or as it is sometimes improperly written, Abergely, is a parish, in the hundred of Isdulas, county of Denbigh – the market town, which is also a sea-port, is 225 miles N.W. from London, 34 W by N from Chester, the like distance from Beaumaris, 12 N by W from Denbigh, and 7 W from St. Asaph; situated on the banks of the river Elwy, near to the vale of Clwyd, in the midst of lovely scenery, and near the line of the Chester and Holyhead railway. It is chiefly to be noticed as a place resorted to in the summer for bathing; and it affords every inducement, either to the invalid, or others, desirous, by quietness, to enjoy a relaxation from the cares of business and the bustle of populous districts. The Bee Hotel here is a very excellently conducted house, either for the accommodation of casual visitors, or commercial gentlemen. Near the town is a cave, said to extend several miles in length, and close to it is Gwrych Castle, the seat of Lloyd Hesketh Bamford Hesketh, Esq. Within three miles, at Kinmel Park, the noble mansion and demesne of Lord Dinorben are situate, and about four miles distant is Garthewyn, the elegant residence of Brownlow Wynne Wynne, Esq.
The places of worship are the parish church of Saint Michael, and a chapel each for Wesleyan Methodists and Calvinists. The living of Abergele is a rectory, in the gift of the See of Saint Asaph; the Rev. James Meredith is the present incumbent. The market is held on Saturday, and the fairs, February 12th, April 2nd, the Wednesday before Ascension day, June 18th, August 20th, October 9th, and December both, for horses, cattle, sheep, wool, pigs and pedlery. The parish contained, by the returns for 1831, 2,506 inhabitants, and in 1841, 2,671.
Post office, John Parry, Post Master. – Letters from all parts arrive every morning at eight, and are despatched at six in the evening.
