1903 Penny Pinching At Droitwich Workhouse

The Droitwich Board of Guardians had originally thought that they had an economical Master of their Workhouse. However, in 1903 they found themselves having to pay out large accounts for the repair and re-stocking of the Workhouse. The late Master allowed the building to get into disrepair and the clothing for the inmates and other items of stock had been reduced to vanishing point. To save on pudding basins and other domestic necessities, the Master even boiled Christmas puddings in bedroom ware and boiled down the lard in bed pans!

(I think I’ll pass on the Christmas Puds this year after reading that!)
